Why Apply For A Scholarship?

Local Scholarships


Georgia Redcross Local Scholarship: Award amount $500-$1,000.
Male or Female applicants.
Must be a prospective graduate of Gloucester High School.
Deadline: April 15

National and Regional Scholarships

Fredda Witherspoon National Scholarship: Award amounts $8,000 (one top winner) and $3,000 (four winners spread to remaining regions)
Deadline: January 15

Dorethea N. Hornbuckle Scholarship: Male or Female applicants. Award amount- $2,000 (one winner)
Deadline: March 1


Alice P. Allen Scholarship: Female applicants only. Award amount - $2,000 (one winner).
Deadline: March 15


Anna J. Steen Scholarship: Female applicants who plans to enter the field of business and/or other professions. Award amount $1,000.
Deadline: May 1


Each Scholarship Application must be sponsored by a local chapter.

Essay Contest

Annually, Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. offers opportunities for young scholars in middle and high school to participate in American Education Week through the Evelyn D. Wilkey Essay Contest.

The essay contest is administered through the local chapters of Iota Phi Lambda and a theme is chosen each year on the National level.

Each scholarship application must be sponsored by a local chapter.


500 Word Essay
Local - $100, $75, $50
National - $500, $250, $100
Awards Available for High School and Middle School Students.
Deadline: November 15

2025 Essay Contest Theme: “Why is it important for students to consider a wide range of careers, including those outside of traditional paths?”
